01 · A Cuttack childhood

1897 · A beginning in Cuttack

Subhas Chandra Bose was born in Cuttack on 23 January 1897. In An Indian Pilgrim, he recalls his father settling here as a lawyer and describes the city as having “some of the virtues of both city and country life.” His family’s Bengal connections and his Odisha upbringing belong in the same life.

Begin with the scale of a childhood: a home, a classroom, someone whose example stays with you. Cuttack gives a familiar name a more intimate geography.

1902 · The first school years

Bose recalls beginning school near his fifth birthday in January 1902. He identifies the Protestant European School, run by the Baptist Mission, as his first school.

Read these memories with a question of your own: what makes a child feel at home in a classroom? His later recollections invite attention to belonging as well as achievement.

1909 · A classroom and a teacher

In January 1909 he joined Ravenshaw Collegiate School in Cuttack. He remembers headmaster Beni Madhav Das as a moral influence and describes correspondence that encouraged his attention to nature.

A teacher can travel with a pupil long after the school day ends. Pause over the influence of a person, rather than hurry through another date. The photograph is a view of the school in 2013; it does not identify Bose’s classroom.

Hear the adult remembering the child

An Indian Pilgrim is retrospective autobiography. Use it as Bose’s account of his early life, with the distance and perspective of an adult looking back. Read chapters I, IV and V alongside the places on this page.

Keep two notes: one detail from his account and one question you would take to a museum. A passage and a place can deepen each other without answering every question.

Meet the story in the birthplace museum

Odisha Tourism identifies the birthplace house as the Netaji Museum. Cuttack Municipal Corporation places it in Odia Bazaar and highlights letters in its collection.

Let one dated letter or labelled object hold your attention. Notice who wrote it, whom it addressed and what the display actually establishes. Follow the museum’s current photography rules.

Save this page for reading, and use the separate museum guide to plan a visit. Confirm opening arrangements and access locally. Ravenshaw Collegiate School is a separate site; this feature does not establish public access to the school.
