01 · A living language

Related does not mean identical

CIIL identifies Kuvi as a Dravidian language used in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Its collection notes use of the Odia script. That writing context does not make Kuvi a variety of Odia.

02 · A living language

Language and letters are different stories

A script is a way to write a language; sharing it does not erase the differences between languages. The forms used by particular communities, publishers and teachers need their own records.

Where the voices were counted · Census 2011

Recorded as Kuvi

6,451people in Odisha

0.02%of Odisha’s 2011 population

This is the individual mother-tongue entry in the Census table. It counts reported mother tongues in 2011, not everyone who can speak the language today.

The entry explicitly labelled Kuvi, placed under KHOND/KONDH in this Census table. Do not substitute the whole group or treat this number as a count of everyone who can speak Kuvi.

Largest recorded counts: Rayagada (5,370); Koraput (786); Malkangiri (294).
